Festive Port and Tonic Recipe
Last year we visited Portugal in the fall and one of our favourite stops was Porto. We quickly realized the drink of choice while sitting in a charming cafe or patio was Port and Tonic (Porto Tonico). Portugal is known for its Port Wine which is fortified wine made in the Douro Valley region. The types of port are white, ruby and tawny. If you are planning a visit to the Douro Valley I highly recommend port tasting (we had never really had port before and turns out we love it!) and if you visit Porto, be sure to visit the Port Houses along on the river. For this Festive Port and Tonic Recipe, I’ll be adding an orange slice and cinnamon stick for garnish which makes it the perfect holiday cocktail!

Before making a cocktail, I always like to prepare my ingredients first. I’ve got my cinnamon sticks ready and I’ve sliced my orange.

After adding ice to the glasses, I pour in 50 ml of white port ( I like Taylor’s which is widely available at liquor stores here). White port unlike tawny and ruby, can be stored in the fridge and enjoyed over time while the others need to consumed right after opening. Another reason this is the perfect holiday cocktail: keep a bottle of white port in the fridge and you’ll be all set for holiday guests!

Next add 100 ml of you favourite tonic water.

Add your orange slice and use a cinnamon stick to stir.

Serve and enjoy! In the summer, add a lemon slice instead for a refreshing summer cocktail!
