Easy Summer Decorating Ideas
Summer is here and our family has been enjoying lots of time outdoors, in the backyard by the pool and at the cottage. With all this time outdoors, I like to keep my indoor summer decorating fuss-free and easy breezy: think coastal cottage vibes. If you’re looking for a few simple ways to update your home for summer, I know you’re going to love my easy summer decorating ideas! Read on for my first tip…
Add a touch of blue
Blue has become my go-to accent colour and it especially shines in the spring and summer months. Adding some soft blue touches to your home in the summer is a great way to get that instant coastal look. Pillow covers, throws, books and frames are all easy ways to add blue to your home. If you’re looking for more of a statement, consider adding a rug in a blue pattern, a painted piece of furniture or even a lamp.
Use rattan
Rattan accents are so fitting in the summer and add lovely texture and interest to your decor. Some of my favourite ways to add rattan to my home are with trays, baskets, placemats and napkin rings. To make even more of a statement, consider adding a rattan mirror or small piece of furniture to your entryway or a rattan lampshade to your bedside or sofa table. My upstairs landing table has something rattan and something blue!
Add a summer scented candle
I love switching out heavier, cozy scented candles for lighter, floral scents in the summer. Peony, rose, jasmine and grapefruit are a few of my faves.
Use seasonal flowers
Incorporating seasonal fresh flowers into your home will give it that extra special summer feel. Whether it’s a potted plant, a bouquet from a farmer’s market or clipped fresh from your own garden, flowers are one of my favourite ways to decorate my home. Some of my faves in the summer are: peonies, roses, hydrangeas, and dahlias.
Try linen
I adore linen all year round but if you’re new to it, summer is a great time to give it a try for that European coastal vibe. Use it on your table, pillow covers and even switch out your sheets and duvet as it’s very breathable for hot summer nights.
Add a touch of nautical (just a touch!)
I love adding a nautical touch to my home in the summer like this handmade driftwood sailboat. It’s a sweet nod to the season but just be careful: too much of any theme like this can look tacky. Keep it to one or two items per space or room and remember: less is more when it comes to themes like this.
Update your artwork
I updated my dining room with this new custom canvas from local artist Chelsey Hornsby Art We discussed size and colours and Chelsey created this beautiful one of a kind piece that complements my home and style perfectly! For a quick update, I also switched out this small print on the mantel (the vintage lemons/oranges reminded me of our time in Italy last summer). There are so many good small shops on Etsy that have inexpensive downloadable prints that you purchase and print on your own.
